Mohali Garbage Protest Ends After MLA Assurance

MOHALI, Aug 14 — A three-day protest by residents of Industrial Area and Shahi Majra, Phase 5, Mohali, over a local garbage processing unit ended on Wednesday after MLA Kulwant Singh assured a permanent resolution.

Addressing the protesters, Singh said that around 15 acres of land have been acquired for a dedicated dumping ground, with possession expected soon. “A boundary wall will be constructed within three to four months. After that, the Shahi Majra site will be used only as a waste collection centre,” he said. Following the assurance, residents unlocked the garbage plant and called off their dharna, expressing trust in the legislator’s commitment.

Singh said that his responsibility as the elected representative to ensure Mohali residents do not face such issues. He noted that a tender has already been issued for a permanent solution. “I urge residents to cooperate by segregating wet and dry waste. This will not only help resolve the problem permanently but also generate revenue,” he said, adding that the CNG company processing the waste will share profits, which can be used for city development.

The MLA also assured that permanent staff will be deployed to manage waste operations efficiently. Criticising the current municipal leadership, Singh said, “During my tenure as mayor, city residents never faced such garbage-related problems. The municipal corporation should focus on resolving civic issues rather than engaging in politics.”
