Mohali, July 25: Authorities are weighing a proposal to restrict heavy vehicle movement during peak morning and evening hours across Mohali city, especially along the congested Airport Road.
Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal, after a review meeting with Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans and Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh, said the curbs—tentatively between 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.—would remain in place until alternate traffic routes are developed.
“The situation on Airport Road demands urgent attention. Until parallel roads are completed, we must explore time-based entry limits for heavy vehicles,” Mittal said.
The DC has sought comprehensive inputs from the district police and other civic agencies to finalize the plan. She also directed departments like the municipal corporation, Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), and the district police to expedite their decongestion strategies.
SSP Hans suggested that traffic near IISER could be eased through temporary road bifurcation, adding, “We are looking at all feasible, immediate options to smoothen the flow during critical hours.”
The meeting also addressed growing concerns around stray and domestic cattle on urban roads. Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh said a long-term solution lies in establishing a dedicated cattle and dairy complex outside city limits.
“We are encouraging owners to keep their animals within their premises. Public awareness campaigns will focus on dung disposal, as clogged sewers are a rising problem,” he said.
Responding to the DC’s request, the MC also agreed to allow garbage from the Balongi area to be shifted to official dumping grounds. The move aims to improve sanitation and visual appeal along the Balongi barrier to Mohali Road corridor.
