Mohali, Aug 21 — Police in Balongi have arrested a man accused of impersonating a Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology official by using forged documents and fake identity proofs.

The suspect, Charanjit Singh, a resident of Jujhar Nagar in SAS Nagar and originally from Sector 24, Chandigarh, had been working as a village-level entrepreneur under the Common Service Centre (CSC) scheme, offering services such as PAN card updates and passport applications. According to police, Singh attended several block- and district-level functions by projecting himself as a government officer.

On June 3, 2025, Singh allegedly posed as a processing officer of the ministry and submitted a letter demanding a workplace. When asked to produce an acceptance letter, he later sent an email attaching documents carrying official stamps and signatures. Ministry verification revealed the papers were forged.

Initially, Singh claimed he had been transferred, but during questioning he admitted to police that the documents and the purported issuing company were fake. Investigators said he also falsely claimed to be inspecting government schemes and even sought police support to set up village camps. Singh reportedly used photographs with senior officers for self-promotion.

DSP Kharar Karan Singh Sandhu said probes further showed the accused arrived at functions in a car fitted with a siren and displayed a number plate marked “Government of India.” He had also claimed, without proof, to be an MBBS doctor from Delhi and an MD in gynecology from Chandigarh.

“We have arrested the accused and recovered the car. The arrest was made in Jhujhar Nagar after a complaint was received. A request for five days’ police remand has been filed. We will investigate whether he duped people financially using his fake identity,” SHO Kulwant Singh said.

Police have booked Singh under Sections 319(2), 336(2), 338, 336(3), and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
