BATALA, Punjab, June 27 — The mother of jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and a man accompanying her were shot dead by unidentified assailants on a busy road in Batala, police confirmed Friday.
Harjit Kaur and Karanvir Singh were travelling by car on Qadian Road in the Civil Lines area Thursday night when armed men on a motorcycle opened fire at close range.
“Both victims were inside the vehicle when the attackers fired multiple rounds before fleeing,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Paramveer Singh.
Karanvir Singh died on the spot and was declared brought dead at Batala Civil Hospital. Harjit Kaur, critically injured in the ambush, was shifted to a hospital in Amritsar but succumbed to her injuries later that night.
Police say the motive behind the attack remains under investigation. “We have launched a full-scale manhunt to track down the shooters,” DSP Singh added.
The killings have raised concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the region, particularly given Harjit Kaur’s connection to Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, a notorious gangster currently lodged in jail.
As of Friday afternoon, no arrests had been made.
