NEW DELHI, AUGUST 16: President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tribute to former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna recipient Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary at his memorial, ‘Sadaiv Atal’, in the national capital. The solemn ceremony featured a prayer meeting attended by Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Bharatiya Janata Party National President Nitin Nabin, and several senior political leaders who gathered to honor the late statesman’s legacy.
Vajpayee, a pivotal figure in modern Indian politics, guided the nation through crucial phases as Prime Minister across three terms, including brief tenures in 1996 and 1998, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004.
“His vision for infrastructure development, national security, and economic reforms reshaped India’s path in the 21st century,” senior leaders stated during the memorial gathering, reflecting on his public service.
Recognized as a founding pillar of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Vajpayee earned respect across the political spectrum for his parliamentarian skills, diplomatic leadership, and Hindi poetry. He was awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 2015. Following his passing on August 16, 2018, at the age of 93, his death anniversary continues to be observed as a day of national remembrance for his contributions to the country.
