New MOF Technology Could Help Solve Global Water & Carbon Crises

by The_unmuteenglish

Washington, Oct 9: The 2025 chemistry Nobel Prize winners — Omar Yaghi, Susumu Kitagawa, and Richard Robson — are pushing forward with work on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that have the potential to address twin crises: water scarcity and carbon emissions.

These MNFs can both capture CO₂ from the atmosphere and extract water vapor, even in arid conditions.

Their startup efforts are testing prototypes in harsh settings like Death Valley, aiming for off-grid systems powered by solar or thermal energy. Still, key challenges remain: scaling it up economically and ensuring reliability.

If successful, MOFs could become a major part of climate tech and sustainable infrastructure.
