CHANDIGARH, June 27— The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against seven accused, including three absconders, in connection with the grenade attack on the Ghanie Ke Bangar police station in Batala, Gurdaspur district, Punjab, that took place on December 12, 2024.
The attack was claimed on social media by Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) operatives Harpreet Singh alias Happy Passia and Gurpreet alias Gopi. According to the NIA, Passia, currently based in the United States, was acting in concert with Pakistan-based terrorist Harwinder Singh alias Rinda and Shamsher Singh alias Shera alias Honey, who is based in Armenia. All three absconders have now been chargesheeted in a Mohali court.
The four arrested accused named in the chargesheet are Kuljit Singh, Abhijot Singh, Gurjinder Singh, and Shubham — all residents of Qila Lal Singh village in Batala. The NIA said all seven have been booked under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Explosive Substances Act, and other laws for their roles in planning and executing the terror attack.
The central agency, which took over the investigation on March 23 this year, said that Happy Passia had recruited Abhijot Singh through his associate Shamsher Singh in Armenia. Abhijot, who has also been arrested in a separate targeted shooting case in Chandigarh’s Sector 10, returned to India and became involved in the logistics of transporting weapons and explosives on instructions from foreign-based handlers.
“He expanded the network by recruiting Kuljit Singh and others. On December 9, 2024, Kuljit picked up the grenade that was later used in the attack on the police station,” the NIA said in its statement.
The NIA added that investigations are still ongoing as part of a broader effort to dismantle the Babbar Khalsa International’s operational network in India.
