No more backbenchers: Rohtak schools adopt U-shaped seating

Rohtak, Sept. 30 – Government schools in Rohtak have begun phasing out traditional row-based seating and replacing it with U-shaped and circular layouts in an effort to eliminate the divide between “frontbenchers” and “backbenchers.” Officials said the new design aims to foster equality, boost engagement, and make classroom interactions more inclusive.

Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta said the model “allows all students to sit directly facing the teacher, allowing better eye contact, easier communication and more engaging classroom interactions.” He added that the arrangement ensures every child is positioned equally, removes the stigma of sitting at the back, and enables teachers to have a full view of the class so that “no student is overlooked.”

According to Gupta, early feedback suggests that the system encourages participation and confidence among students. “It also fosters better discipline. With all students visible and engaged, distractions are significantly reduced, fostering holistic development. This model promotes cooperation, communication and mutual respect in the classroom,” he said.

The administration is introducing the initiative in a phased manner across the district. Teachers are being trained to adapt to the new layout and make the most of its potential benefits.

“We hope this change will improve student performance in the classroom and instil confidence and self-esteem in them. All educational institutions in the district are being encouraged to adopt this new model as soon as possible,” Gupta noted.
