Obesity Surge Among Young Indians Concerning: Park Hospital Doctors

Mohali, April 26— Doctors at Park Hospital, Mohali raised concern over the sharp rise in obesity among young Indians, linking it to broader health risks for the nation.

“Seventy percent of India’s urban population is now overweight or obese,” said Dr. Amit Garg, Senior Associate Director of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, citing a study published in The Lancet.

“The country stands in the middle of a fat explosion, ranking just behind the United States and China in obesity rates, with 30 million adults affected.”

Dr. Vimal Vibhakar, Senior Consultant in General Surgery and Medical Director, noted that obesity stems largely from poor eating patterns rather than simple overeating.

“Obesity is not limited to any one group. It can affect anyone,” he said.

“Losing just 5 to 10 percent of body weight can prevent many diseases linked to obesity. In some cases, surgery becomes the best available option.”

Both doctors urged a combination of preventive lifestyle changes and timely medical intervention to curb the growing crisis.
