Gurdaspur, Feb 25: A police encounter near Puranashala on Wednesday resulted in the death of a suspect linked to the recent killing of two security personnel. The confrontation, occurring roughly 8 km from Gurdaspur on the Mukerian road, led to the death of Ranjit Singh, one of the three men accused of murdering an Assistant Sub-Inspector and a Home Guard jawan.
Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aditya stated that a second suspect has been taken into custody, though his identity has not yet been disclosed. A third individual, identified as Inderjeet Singh, managed to flee the scene and remains at large. During the exchange of fire, CIA SHO Gurmeet Singh sustained an arm injury and was subsequently admitted to the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital for treatment.
The operation follows the earlier deaths of ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard jawan Ashok Kumar at the Adhian checkpost near the International Border. Officials noted that the police had previously taken family members of Ranjit Singh into custody from Adhian, an action that led to his surrender before the fatal encounter.
DIG Border Sandeep Goel is expected to provide further details during a press conference. It was also noted that the deceased suspect’s father is currently serving a prison sentence in Saudi Arabia.
