Chandigarh: A total of 49,142 candidates for sarpanch posts and 1,54,604 for panch posts remain in the running for the October 15 panchayat elections.
According to reports, the Returning Officers rejected the nomination papers of 3,683 sarpanch and 11,734 panch candidates.
Today marked the last day for withdrawal of nominations, and the state Election Commission is compiling the final data on withdrawals, set to be released on Tuesday.
