Chandigarh, October 29: All India Congress Committee Secretary and MLA Padmashree Pargat Singh has said the Congress party will stand firmly with around 800 families of Ambedkar Nagar, Jalandhar, who are facing eviction. He assured that Congress will extend every possible support, including legal assistance, to protect their homes.
Appealing to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to personally step in and resolve the issue, Pargat Singh said the affected residents deserve justice. “If I get the opportunity, I will meet the Chief Minister personally,” he said.
He reminded that under the previous Congress government, a policy was drafted to grant ownership rights to people who had occupied land for over 12 years, upon payment of a nominal amount. “The plan was ready for implementation, but the government changed before it could take effect,” he said.
Pargat Singh said that this is not just about land but about families who have lived there for nearly seven decades.
“Even if the land belongs to the Electricity Department, people have built their homes with their hard-earned money,” he said, urging the government to regularize the properties instead of displacing the residents.
He added that while Congress does not support illegal encroachments, displacing settled families after several decades would be unfair. “Ambedkar Nagar will not be allowed to become another Latifpura,” he said.
