New Delhi, Feb 6: Proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were repeatedly adjourned on Thursday as opposition MPs protested against the deportation of illegal Indian immigrants from the United States.
As soon as the Lok Sabha convened, Congress MPs, joined by other opposition members, attempted to raise the issue.
The uproar forced Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the House until noon. When the session resumed, the protests intensified, with opposition members trooping into the Well of the House, raising slogans against the government. Congress MPs had submitted notices to move adjournment motions, demanding an urgent discussion on the matter.
With disruptions continuing, BJP MP Dilip Saikia, who was presiding over the session, adjourned proceedings until 2 p.m.
In the Rajya Sabha, opposition MPs from the Congress, CPI, TMC, AAP, and CPM had submitted notices under Rule 267, seeking to suspend the scheduled agenda for the day to discuss the deportation issue. The Chair rejected all notices, prompting MPs to raise their concerns from their seats.
“The US deported Indian immigrants in a military plane in the most inhuman manner, and we are not being allowed to raise the issue in the House,” opposition members said.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh, who was in the Chair, ruled that the remarks of opposition MPs would not be recorded. As protests continued, he adjourned the Rajya Sabha until noon.
MPs who submitted Rule 267 notices included CPI’s Santosh Kumar P, TMC’s Saket Gokhale, CPM’s V. Sivadasan, and Congress leaders Anil Kumar Yadav, Shaktisinh Gohil, Pramod Tiwari, Renuka Chowdhury, and Ashok Singh.
