New tech helps small processors build brand identity

Ludhiana, Jan 21: A new study conducted by Punjab Agricultural University has demonstrated how small-scale processors and farmers can use QR codes to secure FSSAI registrations and Geographical Indication (GI) tags more effectively. The research focused on creating a transparent supply chain for essential commodities like wheat flour and pulses.

By utilizing Excel-based data storage on cloud platforms, farmers are now able to provide a full history of their goods. This digital footprint is intended to strengthen local brand identities and ensure that consumers are not purchasing adulterated products.

“By using QR codes, farmers and small processors can give their produce a digital identity from farm to consumer,” the PAU study mentioned. The researchers noted that this approach is particularly practical for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and village-level processing units.

The technology acts as a bridge between the field and the urban consumer, ensuring that the origin of every gram of turmeric or jaggery is verifiable. This level of transparency is expected to significantly reduce the influence of intermediaries who often cut into the profit margins of rural growers.

“Digital technology, especially QR codes, has emerged as a simple and effective solution for farmers,” Preeti said. She noted that the move toward digitalization is a necessary step for farmers who face the challenge of selling their produce at better prices at their own farm or market level.
