Mohali, April 6 – As IPL action returns to Mohali, Punjab Kings (PBKS) are set to take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their first home match of the season at PCA’s Mullanpur Stadium on Saturday evening, looking to extend their winning streak to three.
PBKS, under new skipper Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting, have secured back-to-back wins and aim to build early dominance in the two-month league. The match begins at 6:30 p.m.
“This is about building momentum. We’ve won the first two games and will try to carry that forward,” said PBKS spin bowling coach and former India international Sunil Joshi.
This home fixture carries extra weight, as the team looks to reverse its fortunes at Mullanpur, where it managed just one win out of five last season. Ponting and Iyer, both IPL title-winners in their respective roles, had earlier mentioned their intent to improve the team’s home record.
PBKS, which has seen the most leadership changes in IPL history—17 captains and several coaches since 2008—is now focused on stability. The current squad combines experience with local strength, featuring Punjab players such as Prabhsimran Singh, Nehal Wadhera, Arshdeep Singh, Harpreet Brar and Harnoor Pannu.
Bolstered by a balanced roster of all-rounders and a strong bowling unit, the Kings are expected to offer a tough challenge to Sanju Samson-led RR.
Beyond the match, fans will be treated to live performances by Punjabi artists Jasmine Sandlas and Guru Randhawa ahead of the game.
Following the RR clash, PBKS will play three more matches at Mullanpur: against Chennai Super Kings on April 8, Kolkata Knight Riders on April 15, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 20. Their remaining three home games will be played at Dharamsala’s HPCA Stadium, starting May 5 against Lucknow Super Giants, followed by Delhi Capitals on May 8 and Mumbai Indians on May 11.
