CHANDIGARH. Aug 3 – The Chandigarh police have registered a case of extortion and assault against two men for allegedly blackmailing a PGIMER staffer and demanding ₹15 lakh from him.

The FIR, filed at Sector-11 Police Station, names Manoj Kumar Dhull and Rajesh Kumar as the accused. The complainant, Gourav Sharma, said the dispute began on March 29 at PGI during an MRI procedure for Dhull’s father. Sharma’s cousin, Prachi Gupta, a senior MRI technician, had helped arrange medicine for the test and was secretly recorded accepting ₹1,000 meant for another patient.

According to Sharma, the accused used the video to file a false complaint and began threatening him. The demands intensified — on July 20, Sharma was allegedly asked to pay ₹2.3 lakh to delay any formal complaint, and by July 22, the amount had shot up to ₹15 lakh during a meeting in Kurukshetra.

The matter came to a head on July 29, when Sharma claims he was assaulted at a secluded location near Panjab University, where the extortion demand was reiterated.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway.
