PHAGWARA, May 23: The entire Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team of Phagwara—including CIA in-charge Bisman Singh Mahi—was arrested early Friday morning for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh to release a suspected smuggler.
Alongside Mahi, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Nirmal Kumar and Jaswinder Singh, as well as Constable Jagroop Singh, were taken into custody. The team is accused of taking the bribe in exchange for letting go of a man identified as Hani, who was reportedly involved in smuggling.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Naveen Singla confirmed the arrests and said the police force would not tolerate corruption at any level. “Strict action will be taken against anyone found misusing their authority. The law is equal for all,” Singla said.
The arrested officers will undergo a mandatory medical examination before being presented before the judicial magistrate in Phagwara. Authorities have filed a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Sadar Police Station.
Police sources indicated that internal vigilance had been tracking suspicious activity for some time before moving in with evidence to make the arrests.
