Patna, 2 Sept — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday broke his silence over recent offensive remarks targeting his late mother by leaders of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress during the Bihar election campaign, calling the comments an affront to all mothers in India.
Speaking at the launch of the Bihar Rajya Jeevika Nidhi Saakh Sahkari Sangh Limited via video conferencing, Modi said, “I know the mothers, daughters, and sisters of Bihar are as pained at these insults as I am.” He described the abuses hurled from the shared opposition stage as deeply hurtful and said he wanted to share his grief with the women of Bihar.
Recalling his lifelong journey, Modi said he had devoted over five decades to serving society and the nation, entering politics only later in life. “Every mother desires that her son will serve her. But my mother allowed me to give up all filial duties so I could dedicate my life to the service of the country,” he said. He emphasized that his mother, who had no involvement in politics, had made immense contributions to his life and did not deserve the invectives directed at her.
The prime minister, whose mother passed away after reaching 100 years of age, said the insults were “traumatic and hurtful” and would resonate with the women of Bihar who understand the pain such attacks cause. He added that these remarks were a reflection of the opposition’s disregard for decency and respect.
