PM Modi reviews flood-hit Punjab after aerial survey

GURDASPUR, Sept 9 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday conducted an aerial survey of Punjab’s flood-ravaged regions, describing the disaster as one of the worst since 1988.

Modi, who is on a daylong visit to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, later met flood victims in Gurdaspur, where Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar and party leaders accompanied him. He also chaired a review meeting with senior officials to assess the situation.

“Government of India stands shoulder to shoulder with those affected in this tragic hour,” Modi said earlier in the day on X before leaving Delhi for the visit.

The Prime Minister arrived in Punjab after reviewing the devastation caused by floods and landslides in Himachal Pradesh.

Punjab’s crisis stems from swollen rivers — the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi — and seasonal rivulets that swelled following heavy rainfall in catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Officials noted that this year’s floods have left the state battling its most severe deluge in decades.
