Kangra, Aug 28 — The water level in Pong Dam remained above the danger mark on Thursday morning, keeping downstream areas on alert as high discharge continued into the Beas River.

According to official figures, the reservoir stood at 1,393.61 feet (525.929 meters), more than three feet above the maximum permissible limit of 1,390 feet.

To manage the excess water, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) maintained outflow at 94,845 cusecs, while the inflow was recorded at 79,780 cusecs. Over the past several hours, inflows fluctuated sharply between 57,183 cusecs and 1,10,224 cusecs.

Authorities said discharge levels were being kept high to prevent further rise in water levels, which have only shown a slight decline since the reservoir’s peak.

In downstream Kangra district, officials in Indora and Fatehpur sub-divisions have warned residents to remain cautious as the Beas continues to carry heavy discharge.

District Magistrate Hemraj Bairwa said the situation was under close watch. “The administration is monitoring conditions around the clock, and precautionary measures are being taken in low-lying areas,” he noted.
