Mumbai, Jan 25: A 27-year-old labourer was arrested by the Government Railway Police on Sunday following the fatal stabbing of a college professor at Malad railway station. The arrest of the suspect, identified as Omkar Eknath Shinde, occurred in the Kurar area within 12 hours of the violent encounter that took place on a crowded platform.
The victim, Alok Kumar Singh, served as a professor at NM College. The incident began as a minor verbal dispute between Singh and Shinde while the two were alighting from a local train on Saturday evening. Investigators noted that the disagreement quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
During the struggle on platform number 1, Shinde allegedly stabbed Singh in the stomach. While the professor collapsed, the assailant fled the scene by blending into the evening rush hour crowd.
“The accused took advantage of the crowd and escaped from the spot, but was identified and apprehended with the help of CCTV footage,” a police official said.
Emergency responders rushed Singh to a nearby hospital, but medical staff declared him dead upon arrival. Shinde, who works in metal polishing, now faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
“Shinde has been arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is underway,” the official added.
