Chandigarh, 21 October: A 40-year-old man allegedly slit his mother’s throat on Monday morning in a gruesome incident at their home in Sector 40, Chandigarh, police said.
The victim, Sushila Negi, originally from Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, was found dead in her room after neighbours heard her screams around 7am. “The door was locked from inside, and after several attempts, residents entered through the roof and discovered her lying in a pool of blood,” said Inspector Ram Dayal, station house officer of Sector 39.
The accused, her younger son Ravinder Negi, alias Ravi, who works in the examination branch of Panjab University, had fled the scene. Police later traced and arrested him in Sonepat. “Initial investigation suggests that the accused had been mentally disturbed and often quarreled with family members,” the officer said.
Ravi reportedly attacked his mother following an argument. He had been living with her for the past six months after separating from his wife and daughter due to domestic disputes. Sushila’s elder son, employed in a private company, lives nearby in Sector 41 with his family.
Sushila’s body was sent for post-mortem to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16. Police are continuing their probe to ascertain the full sequence of events and the motive behind the killing.
