MANDI, April 30 — Authorities have issued an urgent advisory for people living near the Beas River, warning of a potential surge in water levels due to a likely emergency release from the Pandoh Dam in Mandi district.
The warning comes in response to a sharp rise in water inflow caused by continuous snowmelt in the dam’s catchment area, according to the Additional Superintending Engineer of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) at Pandoh.
“The inflow into the reservoir has increased significantly due to ongoing snowmelt. As a result, we may have to open the spillway gates at any time to manage the water levels and protect the dam’s structural safety,” the engineer said.
Opening the gates would release excess water downstream, potentially triggering an abrupt rise in the Beas River’s flow. Officials raised concerns that such a surge could endanger individuals in low-lying areas.
In anticipation, residents and tourists have been strongly advised to avoid riverbanks for at least the next 24 hours. Local communities along the river are urged to remain alert and strictly adhere to all safety protocols.
“Public cooperation is critical to preventing accidents. We’re asking everyone to stay informed, act responsibly and avoid unnecessary risks,” a district administration spokesperson said.
Officials confirmed that the situation is under continuous surveillance, and updates will be provided as needed.
Authorities stressed that safety must take precedence over curiosity during this time.
“Please stay away from the river and follow official guidance. This is a precautionary step to ensure no harm comes to anyone,” the spokesperson added.
