Chandigarh, Sept. 3: In response to the worsening flood situation across the state, the Punjab government has ordered the closure of all schools, colleges, universities, and polytechnics until September 7, officials said Wednesday.
The directive applies to all government, aided, recognised, and private educational institutions across Punjab. Authorities described the decision as a precautionary measure to safeguard students, faculty, and staff amid rising water levels and ongoing relief operations.
“Student safety is our top priority. With rivers swelling and low-lying areas affected, it is important that educational institutions remain closed until the situation stabilises,” an official from the state education department noted.
Citizens have also been urged to remain alert, follow official safety advisories, and avoid non-essential travel in flood-affected areas. Officials said further announcements regarding reopening of schools and colleges will be made based on the evolving situation.
The closure comes amid widespread evacuations and flood alerts in several districts, including Patiala, Ropar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Kapurthala, and Jalandhar, where rising rivers and dam releases have threatened low-lying settlements. Emergency response teams continue to monitor rivers, dams, and drainage systems, while relief camps have been set up to accommodate displaced residents.
Authorities emphasised the importance of community cooperation during the crisis. “Residents should follow evacuation orders and stay in designated shelters if needed. Avoid venturing near rivers, waterlogged areas, and unstable roads,” a Punjab state disaster management official said.
With continued rainfall forecast in the coming days, the government has urged residents to stay informed through official channels and maintain preparedness for further emergency measures.
