CHANDIGARH, July 29 — The Punjab government has declared a public holiday on Thursday, July 31, to commemorate the martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh, the revolutionary who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
An official notification announcing the holiday was issued by the state government on Monday. All government offices, boards, corporations, and educational institutions across Punjab will remain closed in observance of the day.
Shaheed Udham Singh was hanged in London on July 31, 1940, for assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, in retaliation for the 1919 Amritsar massacre. He remains a towering symbol of anti-colonial resistance in India’s freedom movement.
The state government said the holiday is a mark of respect for Udham Singh’s unparalleled contribution and sacrifice for the nation’s independence.
