CHANDIGARH, Aug. 22 — Punjab is preparing to introduce a new law aimed at safeguarding trees in cities and towns, with the Forest and Wildlife Preservation Department drafting The Punjab Protection of Trees Act, 2025.
Officials said the legislation seeks to maintain green cover, ensure ecological balance, reduce pollution, and conserve soil in urban areas. Once enacted, the Act would apply across all cities and municipalities in the state.
According to Section 4 of the draft, no person will be permitted to fell, cut, remove or dispose of any tree in an urban area unless the tree is completely dead or has fallen on its own.
“The intent is to provide legal backing for urban greenery, which is critical for air quality and environmental health,” a department official noted.
The proposal comes amid rising concerns over shrinking green spaces and increased urban pollution in Punjab. The draft is expected to undergo further consultations before being finalized for introduction.
