Chandigarh, November 5, 2024 — The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has sharply criticized the BJP-led central government for rejecting Punjab’s request for Rs 1,200 crore to curb stubble burning, accusing the Centre of “consistent discrimination” against the state.

Speaking at a press conference in Chandigarh, AAP MP and spokesperson Malwinder Singh Kang asserted that the Modi government’s actions are undermining Punjab’s farmers.

“This refusal isn’t an isolated incident,” Kang said. “Punjab has faced a series of withheld funds, including the Rural Development Fund, Mandi Development Fund, and National Health Mission Fund, collectively nearing Rs 10,000 crore.”

Kang argued that this refusal adds to a pattern of central government obstruction, citing recent issues in the lifting of paddy, which he alleged were deliberately imposed.

“Now, the Centre is even denying the essential financial support needed to curb stubble burning,” he said.

Despite limited federal assistance, Kang noted that the Mann-led Punjab government has continued its efforts to reduce stubble burning by raising awareness and assisting farmers.

“The Mann government’s sustained efforts over the last two-and-a-half years have resulted in a marked reduction in stubble burning incidents across Punjab,” Kang said.

However, Kang underscored a gap between BJP’s rhetoric and action when it comes to supporting Punjab’s farmers.

“The BJP frequently talks about its commitment to farmers but, in reality, creates obstacles and abandons responsibility,” he stated.

He described the Centre’s stance as “vindictive and damaging to India’s federal framework.”

The AAP spokesperson further stressed the crucial role Punjab’s and Haryana’s farmers play in national food security, calling the Centre’s approach “disgraceful.”

He expressed that AAP “strongly condemns” the Centre’s attitude, which, he argued, shows disregard.
