Chandigarh, 26 December 2024: Severe cold gripped Punjab and Haryana on Thursday, with temperatures dipping across several regions, the India Meteorological Department reported. Chandigarh, the shared capital of both states, recorded a minimum temperature of 7.3 degrees Celsius.
In Punjab, Pathankot and Faridkot reported identical lows of 4 degrees Celsius, marking some of the chilliest conditions in the region. Amritsar recorded 5.7 degrees Celsius, while Gurdaspur registered 6 degrees Celsius. Ferozepur and Rupnagar recorded minimums of 5.7 and 5.9 degrees Celsius, respectively. Ludhiana and Patiala, however, reported slightly higher lows, both settling at 7.4 degrees Celsius.
Haryana also faced biting cold as Narnaul recorded one of the lowest temperatures in the state at 4.5 degrees Celsius. Sirsa followed with a low of 5 degrees Celsius, while Karnal registered 5.5 degrees Celsius. Ambala recorded 7.6 degrees, Hisar 6.9 degrees, and Gurugram remained comparatively warmer with 8.8 degrees Celsius as the minimum.
Meteorologists expect the cold wave to persist, urging residents to take precautions. “With clear skies and calm winds, radiational cooling is intensifying the drop in temperatures, particularly during the night,” an official said.
