Chandigarh, April 18: Amid a major shake-up in the Punjab Advocate-General’s office, the state government has initiated the process to appoint 124 law officers across various categories to bolster its legal representation in Chandigarh and New Delhi.

The Department of Justice issued a public notice on April 16, inviting eligible advocates to apply for the positions by April 25, 5 p.m., either by post or in person at the Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh. Application forms, eligibility criteria, and other details are available on the Punjab government’s official website.

This recruitment drive follows the appointment of senior advocate Maninderjit Singh Bedi as the new Advocate-General on March 30, after the resignation of his predecessor Gurminder Singh. Officials familiar with the matter said the selections aim to strengthen the state’s capacity to defend cases effectively in court.

“The new law officers will play a critical role in representing Punjab’s interests in legal matters pending before courts,” an official from the Department of Justice said.

Political observers view the move as part of a larger realignment by the Aam Aadmi Party-led government in Punjab, particularly after its underwhelming performance in recent Delhi Assembly elections. Sources within the administration noted that the appointments could serve to consolidate control and streamline legal strategy under Bedi, who is believed to enjoy the confidence of the party’s central leadership.

The reshuffle and recruitment are being closely watched as the government navigates a politically sensitive period, with legal positioning seen as a key component of its governance agenda.
