CHANDIGARH, 22 February 2025 — The Punjab government transferred 21 senior IPS officers, including seven Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), in a major reshuffle amid pressure on district police chiefs to improve performance.

The transfers come just days after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met senior police officials following the February 8 Delhi poll results. According to sources, AAP MLAs had raised concerns about police misconduct, alleging “false” FIRs were being registered in some districts. Legislators have also expressed frustration over officers disregarding petitioners they referred.

AIG, Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF), Gurmeet Chauhan has been appointed SSP of Ferozepur, while Jyoti Yadav, wife of Education Minister Harjot Bains, will take charge as SSP Khanna. Chauhan was previously removed from Tarn Taran following a complaint by AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal, while Yadav served as SP (Investigations) in Mohali.

Swapan Sharma, Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, has been shifted as DIG, Ferozepur range.

Five young officers from the 2018 and 2019 batches have been assigned SSP positions across various districts, officials said.

The reshuffle follows a crackdown on corruption within the force. Days earlier, DGP Gaurav Yadav dismissed 52 police personnel, from constables to inspectors, on corruption charges.

The last major reshuffle, which saw 14 SSPs transferred, took place in August 2024 after the Lok Sabha elections.
