CHANDIGARH, October 13 — Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi on Monday directed Chandigarh Police to take immediate action and arrest the 14 individuals named in the suicide note of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. The order came after the police submitted a report to the Commission outlining actions taken so far in the case.
According to the report, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, and the investigation is ongoing. However, Garhi expressed dissatisfaction with the report, noting that it did not include a copy of the FIR, leaving it unclear whether charges have been formally registered against the 14 officials mentioned in the note. The report also failed to provide written details regarding the SIT’s composition and mandate.
Garhi instructed the police to proceed in accordance with the Supreme Court’s verdict in Lalita Kumari vs. State of Uttar Pradesh, which mandates prompt registration of FIRs in cases involving cognisable offences.
The Commission had taken suo motu cognisance of Kumar’s death. Later, Garhi met with the officer’s family and assured them that the Commission would pursue the matter with “firm resolve” to ensure justice.
The directive underscores growing public and institutional pressure for accountability in the high-profile case, which has already drawn attention from political leaders and human rights advocates across the state.
