Ludhiana, October 15, 2025: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Punjab government will turn Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) in government schools into health awareness platforms.
On October 17, all government schools in Ludhiana district will conduct a special ‘Hypertension and Mental Health Awareness Drive’ to screen parents for blood pressure and mental well-being, according to reports.
The campaign, organised under Mission Swasth Kavach in collaboration with Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), aims to link education with community health. Officials said schools will serve as “centres of learning and wellness,” helping spread awareness from classrooms to families.
Deputy District Education Officer (Secondary) Amandeep Singh has instructed each school to measure the blood pressure of at least 100 parents or visitors. “We’ve equipped all schools with BP machines. This drive will promote awareness about both physical and mental health while instilling a sense of social responsibility among students,” he said.
Trained teachers and students will assist in conducting the checkups, with readings taken three times for accuracy. Each school’s health mentor will oversee the process and submit data through Google Forms. The Education Department has also warned that school heads will be held accountable for any lapse.
Officials said the initiative reflects the state government’s integrated approach toward education and public health. “Healthy parents mean healthier families and better-educated children,” an education department spokesperson said.
The Ludhiana model, if successful, could soon be replicated across Punjab — combining classroom engagement with community health for a more holistic approach to development.
