Chandigarh, 19 August — The Punjab Government will submit an affidavit in the Supreme Court on the process of filling vacant posts of assistant professors in government colleges across the state. The move comes after the apex court granted interim relief to Punjab, permitting 1,158 assistant professors and librarians to continue in service until new appointments are made.
The state had recently approached the Supreme Court challenging the quashing of 1,158 faculty appointments in government colleges. In its order, the court allowed continuity for those already serving, pending fresh recruitment.
Education Minister Harjot Bains welcomed the relief, calling it crucial for higher education. In a post on “X,” he wrote: “Relief for higher education in Punjab. The Supreme Court has allowed Punjab Govt’s request to let 1,158 assistant professors and librarians continue in govt colleges till new recruitments are made. This ensures continuity of education for our students in government colleges.”
Bains added that the government is preparing a review petition to defend the appointments. “The Punjab Govt is also in the process of filing a review petition to save 1,158 recruitments and will put the strongest case forward,” he noted.
Officials said the affidavit will outline the state’s commitment to fill the vacant teaching posts through due process, while also safeguarding academic continuity in government colleges.
