Chandigarh, March 21: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Friday declared that the state will introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the agricultural sector to reverse declining profitability and protect natural resources. Speaking at the state-level Kisan Mela at Punjab Agricultural University, the Chief Minister maintained that traditional farming methods have reached their limits and require technological intervention to secure the financial future of the peasantry.
The Chief Minister noted that while Punjab has historically served as the nation’s food bowl, the intensive production has come at a high cost to the state’s soil and water. He stated that the production potential of current crop technologies has plateaued, making AI a mechanical necessity to guide farmers on optimal sowing schedules and crop selection. According to the administration, this move is intended to maximize both productivity and profit margins for small and marginal landholders.
During the event, the Chief Minister affirmed his government’s commitment to improving rural infrastructure. He noted that canal irrigation usage has expanded significantly, rising from 20.90 lakh acres in 2022 to 58 lakh acres currently. He further asserted that his administration has invested ₹6,700 crore into canal modernization and repair over the last three years, representing a 300% increase compared to previous terms.
Addressing social welfare, the Chief Minister announced the “Maavan Dhian Satkar Yojana,” a monthly financial aid program for women set to begin registration on April 13. He declared that while some critics might dismiss the value of ₹1,000, it remains a meaningful support for common citizens. He maintained that his only interest lies in addressing the hardships faced by the people of Punjab rather than personal business ventures.
The Chief Minister also declared that the state is focusing on crop diversification through a ₹1,300 crore horticulture project. This initiative aims to increase the area under horticulture from 3.56 lakh hectares to 16 lakh hectares by 2036. He affirmed that the government would continue to upgrade research facilities at PAU to maintain its status as a leading global institution.
