CHANDIGARH, February 28, 2026: The Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is set to transform early childhood education by introducing ‘Khed Pitara’ learning kits in all government primary schools. This initiative, designed for children aged 3 to 8 years, aims to shift the educational focus from rote memorization to experiential, play-based discovery.
Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains affirmed that the state is investing approximately ₹9.3 crore in this foundational project. The kits will be distributed to 12,856 schools by April 1, benefiting an estimated 7.5 lakh students from Nursery to Class 2. The Minister maintained that this strategic investment is intended to yield results for the next two decades by building a confident and creative generation.
“By investing in children between 3 and 8 years of age, the Bhagwant Mann Government is making a strategic, long-term investment in Punjab’s future,” Minister Bains stated. He noted that the initiative ensures children experience schooling as a process of discovery rather than pressure.
The ‘Khed Pitara’ includes a variety of age-appropriate materials such as puzzles, story cards, puppets, and activity books. All printed content is provided in Punjabi to ensure better comprehension for young learners. The government asserted that this approach will strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy while fostering social and emotional growth.
The Education Department affirmed that procurement is complete and distribution is in its final stages. Teachers will also receive structured support to implement these activity-based materials effectively. This move reflects the government’s broader commitment to reshaping the educational landscape by focusing on the critical foundational years of a child’s development.
