ANANDPUR SAHIB, November 25 — A day after the Punjab Assembly declared Anandpur Sahib a “holy city,” Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday announced a world-class university in the name of Guru Tegh Bahadur here. The declaration was made at the closing ceremony of the Sarv Dharam Sammelan, organised to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the ninth Sikh Guru.
Addressing the gathering at Guru Ka Bagh, Mann said the proposed institution would serve as a global centre dedicated to research, higher learning and interfaith studies. “Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji laid down his life for defending the right to faith and freedom. Establishing a world-class university in his name is the least we can do to inspire future generations,” he said.
Mann said the project aligns with the government’s plan to develop Anandpur Sahib as an academic and spiritual hub. He noted that more decisions would follow toward the cultural and infrastructural uplift of the birthplace of the Khalsa.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who attended the event, called the Guru’s martyrdom a milestone in world history. “Guru Tegh Bahadur taught the world that defending freedom of faith is a duty of all,” he said.
Local MLA Harjot Singh Bains said the announcement met a long-standing regional aspiration. “These decisions will open new avenues for development while preserving the spiritual legacy of the Guru’s city,” he said.
The sammelan brought together representatives from various faiths, along with thousands of devotees, emphasising unity and communal harmony.
