Malerkotla, Dec 25 — A 33-year-old widow, her mother and her 9-year-old son died by suicide in Bhudan village late Tuesday, with a video recorded by the family accusing at least 10 people of harassment, police said.
The deceased were identified as Inderpal Kaur, her mother Hardeep Kaur, and Inderpal’s son, Jordan Singh. The child was found unconscious and taken to a hospital, where he later died, officials said.
Police have registered a first information report against Inderpal’s mother-in-law, Charanjit Kaur, and nine others for allegedly abetting the suicides. The investigation into the motive and circumstances is ongoing.
Before the incident, the family recorded a video detailing alleged harassment by several individuals. The video was sent to a relative, who alerted the police, officials said.
According to relatives, Inderpal had been living with her mother since her husband, Pawandeep Singh, died in an accident seven years ago.
Investigators also confirmed that a dowry harassment case had been filed in 2017 against Charanjit Kaur and her son. That case was later quashed following a compromise between the parties.
SP (D) Sat Pal Sharma said police are examining all allegations made in the video. “Stern action will be taken against those found responsible,” he said.
