Mohali Imposes Night Curfew

Mohali, May 9 — In response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the district administration in Punjab’s Mohali has imposed a series of precautionary measures.

Starting Friday, cinemas and shopping malls in the district will remain closed from sunset to sunrise, according to officials. The restrictions are set to remain in effect until further notice.

The district authorities have also announced a ban on the use of inverters, generators, or any power backup systems that could be used for outdoor lights, billboards, and street lighting.

The directive aims to enforce a blackout in the area, part of measures to mitigate any potential air strike threats. “In light of the current circumstances and intelligence inputs indicating a possible threat of air strikes from Pakistan, a complete blackout during night hours may be necessary to ensure public safety and safeguard strategic interests,” said an official order issued by Mohali Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal.

In addition to the closures, residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in the evening hours. “We request the public not to leave their houses unless absolutely urgent,” the order stated. The authorities also warned against the use of fireworks and long-beam laser lights during the evening, particularly in light of possible blackout operations.

The order also outlined provisions for exceptions, clarifying that law enforcement agencies, including police, paramilitary forces, the Air Force, Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel, and authorized government representatives would not be affected by these measures. Essential services, including hospitals and emergency services, are exempt from the restrictions as well.

“This action has been taken in the interest of public safety and the protection of life and property,” the order added.

The ban applies to all public places such as cinemas and malls, with the intent to minimize risk in the event of further escalation.

If sirens or emergency signals are activated, the public is urged to follow official instructions promptly. Authorities warned that failure to comply with the order would result in legal action under Section 223 of the Indian Penal Code.

The administration said that the decision was being taken urgently and addressed to the public in general. The temporary nature of the order reflects the high level of caution authorities are taking due to the ongoing security situation.
