Guwahati, Aug 18 — An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale struck Assam’s Nagaon district on Monday afternoon, marking the seventh such tremor in the state this month and the third in the district, officials said.
The quake was recorded at 12.09 pm at a depth of 35 km, according to the National Center for Seismology. Tremors were felt in Nagaon and adjoining areas, though there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.
“This was the third quake centred in Nagaon this month,” an official noted. A 3.8-magnitude tremor had been reported in the district on August 7, followed by a 2.8-magnitude quake on August 8.
Altogether, seven earthquakes have rattled Assam in August so far, ranging between 2.8 and 4.3 in intensity. Officials said the pattern of frequent low-to-moderate intensity quakes highlights the vulnerability of the region.
The northeastern states fall under a high seismic zone, and earthquakes occur frequently. Seismologists have cautioned that while most tremors remain minor, the region remains prone to stronger quakes due to its geological setting.
