BEGUSARAI, Bihar, 09 November 2024— A tragic accident claimed the life of a railway porter during a shunting operation at Barauni Junction on Saturday, according to local police. The victim, identified as Amar Kumar Rao, was an employee at the station under the Sonpur Railway Division.
The incident occurred on platform 5 as the Lucknow-Barauni Express (Train No. 15204) pulled in from Lucknow Junction. Rao was reportedly attempting to uncouple the train when it unexpectedly reversed, trapping him between two carriages, railway sources said.
Eyewitnesses raised an alarm as Rao struggled to free himself, but the train’s driver, who had reportedly exited the locomotive, fled the scene instead of reversing the engine or taking immediate action to help. Rao was crushed by the reversing engine, dying instantly at the site.
Graphic visuals from the scene captured the harrowing moment, showing Rao trapped between the coaches while onlookers gathered, some recording the incident on their mobile phones.
Railway authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal mishap and the train driver’s apparent negligence.
