Rains Expected In North India

New Delhi, 8 December 2024: A surge in cold weather has blanketed most parts of North India, with dense fog prevailing in the mornings and evenings. However, Delhi-NCR remains an exception, experiencing mild “pink cold” with a temperature of around 8°C, free from dense fog or rain.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that a western disturbance, active since the night of December 7, is expected to bring rain and colder conditions over the next 2-3 days. Snowfall in the hilly regions is likely to exacerbate the chill. States such as Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh may see light rain, while dense fog is predicted in parts of North India.

Meanwhile, a low-pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal is projected to intensify into a cyclonic storm near Sri Lanka by December 12. Its effects will be felt in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh with light to moderate rainfall. Fishermen have been advised to avoid the southeast Bay of Bengal.

The northeastern states, including Assam and Meghalaya, are bracing for a combination of cold waves and fog. In Delhi-NCR, light rain is expected after December 9, with temperatures hovering around 7°C. The cold in the capital is anticipated to intensify further from December 15.
