Rajpura Thermal Plant to Go Hybrid with Solar Integration

Chandigarh, October 11, 2025: Strengthening its renewable energy, the Punjab government has initiated Nabha Power Limited’s (NPL) ₹641 crore hybrid electricity project at Rajpura, Patiala, to integrate solar energy into the existing 1,400 MW thermal power plant, reducing pollution by 15% and providing affordable electricity for the state.

“This project by Nabha Power is a significant step in Punjab’s clean energy drive. Moving from thermal to solar energy will save the environment and create green jobs for youth,” said Clean Energy Minister Aman Arora. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described it as “a symbol of prosperity for every Punjabi,” mentioning the government’s push for employment and investment through sustainable initiatives.

The plant will operate under a 25-year power purchase agreement with Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL). Work is scheduled to start in December 2025 and will be completed in phases by 2026, increasing the state’s renewable energy capacity substantially.

Currently, the Rajpura thermal plant meets 40% of electricity demand during non-peak hours and 20% during peak hours.

Officials said the hybrid integration will improve environmental performance while stabilizing industrial power supply. In recognition of its environmental efforts, Nabha Power received accolades from the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) this year.

Beyond Nabha Power, the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has rolled out multiple renewable energy schemes. Sixty-six solar plants will generate 264 MW by December 2025, producing 40 crore units annually and saving ₹176 crore in agricultural subsidies. PEDA has also partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, to produce clean hydrogen fuel from paddy straw. Rooftop solar, canal-top projects, and school-based installations have expanded capacity to 815.5 MW, generating significant clean electricity and reducing losses.

Officials said the Rajpura hybrid plant would be a milestone in making Punjab a leader in sustainable energy, combining investment, job creation, and environmental protection.
