NEW DELHI — July 30: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon on Wednesday following uproar from opposition parties demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
Leader of Opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge pressed the Chair for clarity on when the matter would be taken up. “When are you going to take up the SIR issue for discussion? Please give us the date and time,” Kharge asked.
Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien also raised the demand at the start of the session, calling the SIR “an important issue for us.”
The opposition’s protest came after Deputy Chairman Harivansh rejected 18 submitted notices seeking discussions on various issues, including the Bihar SIR, alleged atrocities against Bengalis in other states, the abrupt resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and increasing racial attacks on Indians abroad.
Citing an earlier ruling, Harivansh declined to admit the notices and urged members to allow the House to function smoothly during zero hour. The opposition MPs, however, continued their protests, leading to the adjournment.
The House is expected to resume at 12 noon with the scheduled discussion on Operation Sindoor.
