Randhawa Alleges Death Threat to Son from Jailed Gangster

Chandigarh/New Delhi, Aug 1 — Senior Congress leader and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has accused jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria of threatening to kill his son, calling it a reflection of Punjab’s deteriorating law and order situation under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

In a post on X, Randhawa said the threat was followed by a firing incident at a shop belonging to one of his associates in Fatehgarh Churian on Thursday. “One of my associates met my son, and within an hour of leaving, he was fired upon,” the Congress MP wrote. “Jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria has threatened to kill my son.”

Speaking to the media from Delhi, where he is attending the Parliament’s Monsoon Session, Randhawa said the incident had been reported to Punjab DGP. “No gangster can shake me. But what worries me is the current state of Punjab’s law and order,” he said.

The gangster in question, Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, is currently lodged in Assam’s Silchar jail after being shifted from Bathinda under the PIT-NDPS Act by the Narcotics Control Bureau in March. He remains a key accused in the 2022 murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala and faces multiple other criminal cases.

According to Randhawa, the associate who visited his son was fired at outside his turban shop in Fatehgarh Churian later the same day. “Luckily, no one was injured,” Randhawa said, adding that his associate also received a threatening call believed to be from Bhagwanpuria. Additionally, his son was targeted with objectionable social media comments shortly after the firing.

The Congress MP lashed out at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, accusing them of turning Punjab into “a gangster’s paradise.” He added, “Even during the peak of terrorism, threats didn’t deter us. But if people are being openly threatened from jail, what is left of law enforcement?”

AAP spokesperson Neel Garg responded by urging Randhawa to provide complete information to aid police investigation. “Everyone knows gangsters thrived under Congress governments. Since AAP came to power, we’ve arrested several gangsters and attached their properties. We have zero tolerance toward criminal elements,” Garg said.

Randhawa, however, questioned the effectiveness of the state’s intelligence and cybercrime wings. “If a common man posts a gun selfie, they’re arrested immediately. But gangsters are issuing threats openly—what action is being taken?”

He also referred to the recent daylight murder of a businessman outside his showroom as further evidence of the state’s law and order collapse. “There have been several such grave incidents. Is this the situation Punjab has been reduced to?”

Citing a recent double murder in Batala, including the mother of Bhagwanpuria, Randhawa questioned why an AAP MLA called it a “political murder” without a police statement. “What are police doing? I’ve repeatedly raised concerns about a nexus between gangsters and certain police officers, which is a threat to national security. No action has been taken,” he said.

Backing Randhawa, Punjab Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa called the threat “a damning indictment of governance.” He posted on X: “If gangsters can intimidate MPs from behind bars, what chance does the common man have? Is this the ‘badlav’ AAP promised?”

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also slammed the Mann-led administration. “A gangster has the audacity to threaten a senior INC leader from inside jail! Imagine what ordinary citizens face,” Warring said, terming the situation a “complete collapse” of law enforcement.
