Kyiv, Nov 8: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday confirmed that rescue operations were underway in Dnipro after Russia struck the city overnight, destroying a residential building and leaving civilians dead and wounded.
“As of now, 11 people have been reported injured, including children. Unfortunately, one person has been killed. My condolences to the family and loved ones,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X, describing the devastation caused by the attacks.
He said dozens of residents were rescued from under the rubble in Dnipro, while Russian strikes also caused casualties in other parts of the country. “Tragically, one life was also lost in the Kharkiv region, and people were injured in the Kyiv and Poltava regions,” he noted.
Zelenskyy said Russian forces targeted Dnipro, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv, while the Odesa region remained under continuous assault since Friday evening. “All relevant services are deployed wherever required—restoring facilities, supporting people, and aiding the injured,” he added.
According to the president, Russia launched “over 450 attack drones and 45 missiles of various types,” hitting homes, energy infrastructure, and other civilian areas. He urged Western nations to tighten sanctions, freeze Russian assets, and expand restrictions on the energy and nuclear sectors.
“This is a matter of resources for killing,” Zelenskyy said. “Pressure must be intensified. Russian strikes show that sanctions on its energy and military-industrial sectors are still incomplete.”
Officials reported civilian deaths in several regions, including two children killed in Dnipropetrovsk, two civilians in Odesa, and one in Mykolaiv. Power outages were reported nationwide after the attacks crippled energy facilities.
Ukraine’s national operator, Ukrenergo, later announced scheduled blackouts, citing “massive missile and drone attacks on energy targets.”
Zelenskyy said Ukraine was working with allies including the United States, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Japan, and others to restore power and strengthen defenses before winter.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military claimed successful strikes inside Russia, targeting fuel infrastructure near Moscow and an oil terminal in Tuapse. Russia said it intercepted 164 Ukrainian drones overnight, including dozens over Crimea and the Black Sea.
The fighting remained intense along the frontlines near Pokrovsk in Donetsk, where Russia claimed to have killed Ukrainian special forces—an assertion Kyiv denied.
“Almost every night, Russia strikes our people with different weapons,” Zelenskyy said, thanking international partners for their continued support. “We are grateful to everyone standing with Ukraine.”
