Dubai, 20 February — Rohit Sharma became the second fastest batter to reach 11,000 runs in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) during India’s Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh on Thursday.
He achieved the feat in his 261st innings, trailing only Virat Kohli, who reached the milestone in 222 innings.
The Indian skipper, playing his 270th ODI, reached the landmark in the fourth over of India’s chase of 229, dispatching Mustafizur Rahman for a boundary over mid-on. “He has been a pillar at the top of the order,” a team official mentioned.
Rohit is the fourth Indian and 10th overall to surpass 11,000 ODI runs. He follows Kohli, who has 13,963 runs and is close to becoming the third player to reach 14,000 in the format. The list of leading ODI run-scorers is topped by Sachin Tendulkar (18,426), followed by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (14,234).
Among Indian batters, Rohit is behind Sourav Ganguly (11,363) but ahead of Rahul Dravid (10,889) and MS Dhoni (10,773). He also ranks second in most sixes hit in ODIs, with 338, just behind Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi (351).
With an average nearing 50, Rohit has amassed 32 centuries and 52 half-centuries, cementing his place as one of the most successful openers in ODI cricket.
