Amritsar, April 1: The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) has urged the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to address air pollution from Amritsar’s Bhagtanwala garbage dump, which it says is contaminating holy sarovars and shrines.
SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann submitted a memorandum to SGPC secretary Partap Singh, pointing out that the city’s waste site is just 1.5 km from the Golden Temple. Fires at the dump often burn for days, generating heavy pollution that, he said, dulls the shrine’s gold plating. “The SGPC has to bring in experts from the UK to clean the gold plating and marble surface,” Mann stated.
He also thanked the SGPC for including a resolution in its recent general house meeting condemning Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks in Parliament about Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his alleged sarcasm on the recitation of Gurbani. Additionally, Mann raised concerns over extrajudicial killings in India and abroad, attributing them to government actions.
