Chandigarh, 07 November 2024: Former wrestler Sakshi Malik recently released a video on her X handle, voicing concerns over alleged threats she has received and appealing directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for intervention to safeguard the future of Indian wrestling.
In her video, Malik discussed ongoing issues with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), asserting that the federation continues to operate in defiance of a court order suspending its activities. “Respected Prime Minister and Sports Minister, I greet you,” she began, addressing both leaders. “After last year’s Wrestling Federation elections, everyone saw Brij Bhushan Singh’s influence and intimidation. It troubled me deeply, leading me to step away from wrestling. Despite the government’s suspension, the federation resumed operations.”
Malik further alleged that she has been threatened with baseless corruption charges, which has compounded her distress. She criticized the WFI’s disregard for legal orders, saying, “The court questioned how the federation could continue its work after the ban, and the High Court issued a stay. Yet, the WFI has ignored these orders. When the court reprimanded them again, they placed young athletes at the forefront. I understand the difficult position these athletes face; their careers hinge on the federation.”
In a direct appeal, Malik urged the Prime Minister to consider the implications on athletes under Brij Bhushan’s leadership. “Prime Minister, if you think the future of these girls is secure with a federation dominated by Brij Bhushan, lift the suspension. Otherwise, a permanent solution must be found,” she said.
Malik’s message sheds light on persistent issues within the WFI and calls for government intervention to create a secure and fair environment for athletes. This development follows the high-profile 2023 protest where Malik, along with wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, protested against WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh, who faced sexual harassment allegations involving female wrestlers.
