KHARAR, April 6: — Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu has requested Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to improve rail connectivity at Kharar Railway Station, calling for additional train stoppages and a reservation counter to meet the needs of the expanding town.

In a memorandum submitted to the minister, Sandhu proposed Kharar be made a halt for six pilgrimage trains, including the Hazur Sahib Nanded–Amb Andaura Express, Dehradun–Amritsar Express and Hemkunt Express. He said the move would benefit students, residents, and pilgrims, while also boosting tourism and the local economy.

“Kharar has emerged as a key educational and economic centre with a population of over 10 lakh,” Sandhu said. “It is home to two universities and seven colleges, attracting students from across India and 60 foreign countries.”

He said improved train services and a reservation counter were critical to accommodate the town’s growing demand for rail access. Sandhu also cited Kharar’s historical importance, referring to its links with Maharaja Ajj and the historic battleground of Chappar Chiri.

The MP added that he had previously raised the matter with Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, and renewed the demand in view of the town’s rapid development.
