Senior Punjab officials submit testimony to Delhi Assembly Privileges Committee

Assembly Speaker affirms zero tolerance for violations of legislative dignity

New Delhi, Feb 27: Three high-ranking officials from Punjab appeared before the Committee of Privileges of the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Friday to present their formal submissions. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Alok Shekhar, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, and Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur provided their testimonies in a session focused on matters of legislative protocol.

Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta stated that the committee is currently in the process of examining the details of the issue. He noted that a comprehensive report is expected once the proceedings are concluded. The Speaker asserted that the final decision regarding the matter will be taken by the Chair after the committee’s recommendations are tabled and deliberated upon by the House.

Addressing the importance of the proceedings, Gupta declared that the dignity of the Assembly is a fundamental reflection of the country’s democratic and constitutional framework. He stated that there can be no compromise regarding the privileges afforded to the House, its members, and its officials. The Speaker maintained that these protections are essential to ensure that representatives can participate in legislative discussions without facing external pressure or interference.

The Speaker further affirmed that the House maintains a policy of zero tolerance toward any actions that constitute tampering with or violating these established privileges. He stated that while it is difficult to provide a specific timeline for the conclusion of the inquiry, the process remains thorough and focused on upholding the House’s integrity. The Privileges Committee, chaired by Pradyumn Singh Rajput, continues to oversee the ongoing examination of the officials’ submissions.
